Online Teaching Q&A for teachers
During the Novel Coronavirus prevention and control period, CAU decides to implement online teaching and blended teaching methods for the 2020 Spring semester. In order to assist foreign teachers to quickly adapt to the online teaching platform, and to ensure the quality of the online teaching, based on CAU’s Online Teaching policy, we sorted out the issues concerning online teaching for ICB faculties and summarized the Q&As as follows:
01 Q: What’s the teaching plan for ICB during the Novel Coronavirus prevention and control period?
A: According to CAU’s general principle of “Delay returning to campus, Start classes as normal, and Change teaching mode” in Spring semester, ICB decides to use Rain Classroom as the main teaching platform, and will put the course data into this platform. In addition, based on the contents and feature of each course, teachers can use Tencent Meeting, ZOOM, ICB Online Learning, WeChat or other teaching tools to assist teaching. We strongly suggest teachers to prepare a backup tool in case of the Internet traffic jam of the main platform.
In addition, according to CAU’s requirement, all the internships, gatherings, and out-door activities are suspended during the Novel Coronavirus prevention and control period.
The system of Rain Classroom for ICB is expected to be ready around February 20th. By that time, please get familiar with the functions and operations of this platform (and other teaching tools you would like to use), formulate the course teaching plan and prepare the online teaching materials. Then log in Rain Classroom before February 23rd, upload teaching materials (or send them to students via email, WeChat, and etc.), and conduct online teaching testing with students. Please start your class according to the arrangements of your program office and the updated class timetable from February 24th.
02 Q: How should the teachers prepare for the online teaching?
A: Teachers shall properly adjust the teaching progress, write weekly teaching calendar and detailed course notices, and specify the online teaching plan information of at least 1-4 weeks, including courseware (and related preview materials)，upload time, homework release time, student submission time, online Q&A time, assessment time, assessment rubric and ratios, etc.
According to the teaching schedule, teachers should upload relative materials to the online teaching platform regularly, which include syllabus, teaching calendar, course notices, electronic textbooks or reference materials, courseware (handouts like lecture notes, slides), homework, quizzes, and etc.
ICB has collected Rain Classroom English user guides and English operating video materials for foreign teachers, which have been sent to you by the program director and are also attached here at the end of this Q&A guides.
03 Q: What are the features and functions of Rain Classroom?
A: As ICB’s main teaching platform during this special period of the new semester, Rain Classroom is an intelligent terminal platform connecting teachers and students, which integrates teaching process into PPT and WeChat. In Rain Classroom, teachers do not need to change their teaching habits. If you can use PowerPoint (on computer) and WeChat (on mobile phone), you can teach with Rain Classroom. In the online class, teachers can use pre-class preview PPT + voice dubbing, in-class PPT + voice broadcast, or PPT + video live broadcast. Teachers can quickly achieve real-time synchronization in class by organizing online check-in, random roll call, danmu, post, quiz, homework, and so on. After class, students can also enter the class at any time to watch “course playback” for review.
04 Q: How to login Rain Classroom?
A: The way to log in Rain Classroom and enter the course is as follows:
1) Identity Bind ( ready around Feb 20th)
Search “Rain Classroom” in WeChat and follow the official account. In the office account homepage, click “More” on the bottom of the page, and select “Bind School” in the menu bar. Then search and select “International College Beijing, China Agricultural University (or 中国农业农业大学国际学院)”, enter your personal information according to the page prompt (student/teacher number is the salary number, and password is the last 6 digits of your salary number), and make identity binding. After that, you can see the information of the course, classes and students you will teach in Spring semester.
2) Install Rain Classroom on PC
Please open the official website of Rain Classroom http://ytk.io/, then download and install the software according to the instructions. After installation, open any PPT file on the computer. If “Rain Classroom” appears in your PowerPoint toolbar, it means you have installed Rain Classroom successfully.
3) Teach with Rain Classroom
a. Open the PPT to be used in the course, click the “WeChat Log In” icon in the top left corner of the PPT file, and then scan the code with WeChat to log in (Make sure the identity binding have been completed).
b. Click on the icon “Start Class” of the PPT file, select the course and section, and then click on the button “Start Class” at the bottom to make sure to start the class.
c. A QR code is generated after click on the button “Start Class”, which appears on the screen, with a class code at the bottom. Students can scan the QR code or input the class code via WeChat to join in class.
05 Q: How to notify students to study?
A：ICB will put the courses and student data into Rain Classroom for Spring semester soon. Teachers log in the platform and select the course; students log in and select the corresponding course. The two sides can establish contact and communicate without any other operation.
Notice: All the teachers and students need to bind identities when they log in for the first time.
06 Q: How to solve the problem that students do not have textbooks?
A: To facilitate students to study at home, teachers can upload electronic version of the authorized textbooks (or scan the related pages of the authorized paper textbooks or other teaching materials into photos or PDF files) to the online teaching platform. Frequently asked questions about Rain Classroom:
What hardware does rain classroom require?
PC: Windows XP SP3, Windows 7 or above, no support for Mac operating system. Mac users can use rain classroom by installing Windows & OS x dual system or virtual machine Windows installation.
PPT: Office 2010 and above, Office 2007 (need to download rain classroom special installation package for Office 2007), WPS personal version after 6929
Mobile phone: able to use WeChat.
The class is about to start, how to remind students to attend?
After you click onto the “start class” button in rain classroom and choose either "voice broadcast" or "video broadcast", you can send "class reminder" to students so that they can receive live broadcast reminder via the public account of rain classroom in their WeChat. Students can just click onto the reminder and join the class.

Can I share screen with students?
At present, sharing screen with students is not supported. If you have an external camera, you can shoot the computer screen for students to see. Live screen function is under development, and will be online later.
Teachers can also choose the method of rain classroom + Tencent Meeting /ZOOM+ WeChat to make up the function of sharing screen and teacher-student voice interaction. Please refer to:

What does the "Unclear" button mean and how to use it?
In class, there is an "Unclear" button at the bottom of each PPT page on the students' mobile phone. If students don’t understand a specific PPT slide, they can click the “Unclear” button on the PPT page. The information will immediately transfer to the teacher's mobile phone.
Teachers can click the PPT thumbnail and then click "Unclear" on above to check how many students got confused of which page.
At present, Rain Classroom does not support students to “speak” in the class during the live streaming, then how to communicate with students?
Students can answer your questions by sending “Danmu” or through writing a post in class live streaming. The word limit of “Danmu” is up to 20. A post can conclude texts, pictures and short videos (up to 30 seconds). If you want to enable students’ online voice speech or have group discussion, please consider the combination of Rain Classroom+ Tencent Meeting/Zoom/WeChat. The specific way is decided by the teacher. Teachers can decide which way is suitable for your class.
Will the students’ posting interrupt the online class?
No. Teachers can choose which post or Danmu to be displayed publicly on the screen, and decide either to turn it on or off anytime in class.
What is the use of random roll call in online teaching? If a student has been called upon, is he/she required to respond on the phone?
Random roll call is a way to communicate with students. Students who are selected can interact with teacher by sending post.
Should the in-class-quizzes/tests being inserted into PPT slides before class or can it be set up during class?
The in-class-quizzes/tests should be already written up and put into PPT slides. Teachers can send the quiz/test items while lecturing to students. The content will show on students phone so that they can see and answer. The question type include multiple choice, fill-in-the-blanks, poll, and open-up questions.
When the editing of the question is finished, why can't I submit it?
The "submit" button at the bottom of the edited question is for students to answer & submit the question. It is invalid when editing the courseware.
I have mathematics or math-related course, does Rain Classroom support inputting the formula?
Yes. When designing the PPT, teachers can use PPT formula function directly to edit slides.
I want to show the courseware to students in the format other than PPT. Is it possible in live streaming?
Since the screen sharing function has not been online yet, only PPT can be displayed during the live broadcast of rain classroom. Courseware in other formats can be uploaded in the class library before class for students to view, and the rain classroom will show how much time students spend on the materials.
What else should I pay attention to about the PPT that presented in class?
About embedding action in the slide: the Actions can’t be played in the live class. Only in the form of preview or after class courseware that is uploaded on to the platform can students view the action embedded in PPT.
About embedding videos in the slide: It is suggested that teachers put the video into the preview courseware and distribute it to students for preview. At present, it is not possible to play videos (other than MOOC videos) in live class.
