Mu De Yuan,
Dean of Cinematography, Beijing Film Academy
Renowned Beijing Cinematographer Gives Film Lectures at ICB
April 26, 2012 –Mu De Yuan (穆德远), one of China’s most celebrated cinematographers, delivers three lectures at International College Beijing (ICB) on Chinese cinema and its competition with the West.
Mu De Yuan is Dean and Professor of Cinematography at the Beijing Film Academy. He is a member of the distinguished “Fifth Generation” of Chinese filmmakers who graduated from the Beijing Film Academy in 1982 – the first new generation of directors and cinematographers to produce films after The Cultural Revolution. These films departed consciously from traditional methods of story telling, adopting new, deeply personal narrative and visual techniques.
Dean Mu’s most distinguished films include Sacrifice of Youth (青春祭, 1985), Lonely Spirit in an Old Building (黑楼孤魂1989), King of Masks (变脸1995)，Genghis Khan (一代天骄成吉思汗2000), and My Long March (我的长征，2006), among many others. He is the recipient of numerous Chinese and international cinematography and outstanding teaching awards. His film Genghis Khan, shot on location in Mongolia and recorded entirely in the Mongolian language, was screened widely in the United States and won the Golden Award (First Prize) in the Philfilm International Film Festival. Mu De Yuan has won the support of the Chinese State Council and was voted in 2005 as one of Beijing’s top creative film artists.
In addition to his teaching and administration duties, Dean Mu is also a regular film director and cinematographer for CCTV and recently directed the CCTV drama series, Secret War (密战). His book, Cinematography for Feature Film (2010, China Film Press)(《故事片电影摄影创作》, 中国电影出版社出版), is a landmark view of international film history and camera technique, and is a must read for serious film makers and students.
